SUMMARY:Historic Chapel of The Cross Self Guided Tours
DESCRIPTION:The Chapel of the Cross located on East Moore Street\, was built in the mid 1800s. It was developed for the Chapel of the Cross congregation in 1843. One of the oldest churches in the city\, it was named after St. Philip’s Church in Old Brunswick Town. It was burned by the British in 1776. DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, July 1\, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM\, we will\, for our 19th-year\, continue building our “Living Shoreline” at Waterway Park and 2-adjacent properties plus clean-up trash along our ICW! \nWith UNCW Professors as well as graduate and undergraduate students as a guide\, each year St. James Conservancy and partners aid in the existing shoreline project to enhance and extend the barrier. This coordinated activity is as an ecological service to prevent erosion yet provide a habitat for marine life\, among many other benefits. Each oyster cleans 30-50-gallons of water a day (actually\, a bathtub full). The last work day resulted in the placement of 800  bags of oyster shells and the planting almost 2\,200 plugs of Spartina Alterniflora marsh grasses. Participants become citizen scientist and include graduate/undergraduate student leaders from UNC Wilmington\, as well as South Brunswick High School Aquaculture Teacher and students. \nVolunteers Needed!!!\nLUNCH WILL BE SERVED!! DESCRIPTION:UPDATE:  Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce \nSouthport\, NC\, June 27\, 2024–The members of the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce gathered at the Southport Community Building for the Chamber’s 49th Annual Meeting on June 26th. This meeting serves as an opportunity for the membership to network\, celebrate the success of the fiscal year and refocus for the coming year. \nAfter enjoying a sweet breakfast provided by Burney’s Bakery of Southport\, Bald Head Coffee & Tea House\, and Nonnie’s Baking Company the meeting was called to order.  Keynote speakers Trevor Carroll\, PE\, Deputy Division Engineer\, and Michelle Howes\, PE Corridor Development Engineer\, Division 3\, NC Department of Transportation gave a detailed update about transportation improvements in development\, under construction\, and unfunded future projects. \nThe meeting also serves as a platform for the leadership to pass from the current President of the Chamber’s Board of Directors to the next.  Teresa Carroll (Edward Jones) passed the presidential gavel to Brooke Rudd-Gaglie (Margaret Rudd & Associates\, Inc.\, REALTORS).   Prior to relinquishing the presidency\, Carroll reflected on the past year and made several recognitions.  “We have refocused our efforts and the members resources to create additional member centric opportunities like the Coastal Health\, Fitness & Beauty Showcase and the Fashion with Friends Fashion Show.  Both events were hugely successful and showcased different segments of our membership.”   “We also packaged our membership levels to streamline the event sponsorship opportunities – giving our members options to increase support and business visibility.”  Carroll stressed the need to grow the membership and challenged the current members to recruit one new member in the next 30 days. \nThe President’s Award is presented annually to an individual or group that has significantly impacted our business community or the Chamber. Carroll awarded this year’s President’s Award to Ben Frazier(The State Port Pilot). “Your dedication extends beyond professional achievements. You have been a champion of numerous charitable causes\, dedicating countless hours to volunteer work and ensuring our chamber thrives through community memberships.” Carroll continued by thanking Frazier for his “exceptional service and for making our community a better place.“ \nCaroll announced the 2023/2024 Ann Hollingsworth Ambassador of the Year\, Felicia Sexton (Independent Associate of LegalShield/IDShield and Carolina Crab Brewing Company) for representing the chamber at the 58 Chamber functions.  Ambassadors are fellow chamber members who volunteer their time to update other chamber members about upcoming activities and gain feedback from the membership. \nCarroll completed the awards by recognizing fellow retiring Lisa Benna (Benna Consulting\, LLC)\, Cindy Capps (Rusty Hooks Dockside Grill & Sunset Deck)\, Heather King (Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center)\, Brina Neeley (Coastline Insurance Associates of NC & Beach Body Contouring & Wellness)\, Pamela Sexton (Cattail Cottage).  The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce is governed by a 15-member Board of Directors of which five directors are elected annually and serve a three-year term. \nBrooke Rudd-Gaglie (Margaret Rudd & Associates\, Inc.\, REALTORS) thanked Teresa Carroll for her service and leadership as the presidency was handed over to her for the 2024/2025 fiscal year.  She then addressed the membership “One of my fondest memories dates back to when my father\, S.R. “Buddy” Rudd Jr. chaired the US Open King Mackerel Tournament. DESCRIPTION:NEWS BRIEF FROM SOUTHPORT OAK ISLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE \nAs we kick into high gear this tourism season\, the Southport Oak Island Chamber of Commerce-Welcome Center took the opportunity to show its appreciation to our tourism professionals by delivering a bag of goodies to those members in the accommodation\, restaurant\, and retail industries. \nThe Chamber’s Tourism Counts Referral campaign is designed to help front-facing tourism professionals become aware of and connect with the companies and services that tourists may need when they are visiting our community. \nHow does Tourism Count? According to a 2022 study of all North Carolina Counties commissioned by North Carolina Travel\, Tourism & Sports Development – Visitors: \n• SAVED – Local tax savings per Brunswick County resident – $529.12 \n• SPENT – $283.68 million in lodging\, $316.96 million in Food & Beverage\, $144.40 million in recreation\, $100.41 million in retail\, and $246.28 million transportation in Brunswick County. \n• EMPLOYED – 5\,277 people were employed in the Brunswick County tourism industry. \n• RANKED – Brunswick County is 6th in the state for overall total spending by visitors. \nMany members  volunteered to help stuff bags and deliver bags the 300 bags between June 17th -19th in the Southport-Oak Island area – Hugh Fosbury\, iTrip Vacations Oak Island; Anne Wilson (booster member)\, Briton Hollister\, Throw Baxe Axe House and Board Game ; Pam Lewis\, Bald Head Coffee; Brandon Hill\, Gimmzi Smart Rewards; Carol Magnani\, The State Port Pilot\, Suzanne Street\, Southport Suzie’s; Cindy & Ryan Callahan\, Trash Can Porter\, LLC\, Richard D’Anjolell\, Nowcat; Kandace & Brian Hill\, Picture Van Go; Tracy Green\, HandCrafted* Massage\, Isabelle Roseme\, New Home Specialist; Felicia Sexton\, LegalShield Associate and Carolina Crab Brewing Company; and Eric Franke\, Fish 4 Advice. \nBusinesses who recognized the opportunity and wanted to show their appreciation to the front facing personnel donated items to put in the bag – Yoga Unlimited\, Throw Baxe Axe House and Board Game Lounge\, Bald Head Coffee\, Gimmzi Smart Rewards\, Dosher Memorial Hospital\, Cattail Cottage\, Southport Suzie’s\, Island Healing & Chiropractic Cape Fear Fitness\, This WEEK St. James\, Unleashed\, the Dog & Cat Store\, The State Port Pilot\, Picture Van Go\, Carolina QuickCare\, Fuel-Chiropractic\, Coastal Cosmetic Family Dentistry\, Ocean Crest Motel\, Trash Can Porter\, LLC\, Nowcat\, Swanson Realty\, JMT Services\, HandCrafted* Massage\, and The Pearl.
