SUMMARY:Knights of Columbus 2024 Charity Golf Tournament
DESCRIPTION:The Knights of Columbus at Sacred Heart Catholic Church will hold its 25th Annual Charity Golf tournament at the Carolina National Golf Course in Bolivia\, NC on Wednesday\, September 25 2024. The tournament is a flighted scramble. The cost is $125 per person\, which includes golf and cart\, light breakfast\, beverages\, cookout after golf\, and prizes for closest to the pin and flight winners.  There will also be a multiple prize money raffle\, a live auction\, and a putting contest.  In addition\, there will be a boat trip raffle for a 2hr. ride for 10 people along the Intracoastal Waterway with drinks and d’oeuvers included. The boat trip raffle tickets will cost $100 each\, but only 100 tickets will be sold. \nAll net proceeds will go to Brunswick County Charities serving needy Brunswick County residents. Help us to continue supporting these local charities that make a difference in our community. DESCRIPTION:102 donors signed up for the recent American Red Cross blood drive in Southport\, and 86 signed in. There were 15 no-shows\, 6 walk-ins and 7 donors who left. In all\, 96 units of blood was collected\, for 122% of the quota. A special “thank you” to all the donors who made this our best blood drive of 2024! \nThe next Red Cross blood drive will be held from 9:30 AM — 2:30 PM on Monday (9/16) at the St. James Community Center. SUMMARY:Civil War Round Table Announces 2024–25 Program Schedule
DESCRIPTION:Informative and entertaining monthly programs have been the main reasons for the Brunswick Civil War Round Table’s success this past season. Over 180 joined for the first time\, and this non-profit organization maintained its envious reputation as the largest Civil War round table in the country with 1\,088 members. The momentum will continue when the new season begins. \nThe scheduled programs include: \n\nTuesday\, September 3rd: “Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.” Popular and entertaining Civil War historian Chris Mackowski returns to our round table by popular demand. He will discuss the second major Civil War engagement in Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s Overland Campaign. This major offensive was designed and executed to chase down Gen. Robert E. Lee\, destroy his forces\, and defeat the Confederacy. Chris’s dynamic presentation promises to “seize” your attention.\nTuesday\, October 1st: Award-winning Civil War historian and author of 21 books\, Eric J. Wittenberg will bring to life the dramatic campaign of Union Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman’s “March to the Sea” in his presentation entitled\, “Sherman’s Carolinas Campaign.” Sherman’s tactics devastated the South. The destruction of civilian property is still debated by historians today\, although it undeniably played a crucial role in the Union’s final victory. Eric will state the facts and doesn’t take sides.\nMonday\, October 14th: The Civil War Ladies’ Forum (sponsored by the BCWRT)\, is pleased to introduce to all the ladies in attendance\, Mrs. Mary Duffy\, tavern owner in Smithville. She will share a wealth of memories and stories about life during the “War of Southern Independence.” All of this will be shared by guest speaker Liz Fuller decked out in period dress. Liz is a popular speaker\, and is current president of the Southport Historical Society.\nTuesday\, November 5th: Another popular returning guest to discuss cattle rustling is author\, preservationist\, and historian\, Will Greene. His presentation is appropriately entitled\, “The Beefsteak Raid at Petersburg.” The raid was a success\, capturing over 2\,000 cattle\, along with some prisoners and wagons. The raid provided a much needed food source for Confederate soldiers defending Petersburg. However\, without beef preservation capabilities in the intense summer heat\, soldiers simply had to dine on steak every day while it lasted.\nTuesday\, December 3rd: The Round Table is honored to have award-winning “living historian” Curt Fields join us once again to portray Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant\, in military uniform and traditional cigar. Nationally recognized\, Curt’s extensive research gives him permission to deliver an accurate persona of Grant\, including quotes from Grant’s memoirs\, articles and letters he wrote\, and remarkable statements or decisions he made while Union troops were under his command. Whatever he decides to share with us\, it will take us back into history.\nTuesday\, January 7\, 2025: Always interesting and captivating\, prolific author\, frequent lecturer\, and longtime Advisor to the BCWRT\, Col. Wade Sokolosky (Ret.) will reveal\, following years of careful research and archival sources\, a most thought-provoking presentation about a forgotten phase of Civil War history. Entitled\, “North Carolina Confederate Hospitals\,” Wade will discuss his comprehensive study on how the losses from disease\, sickness\, and early operations in North Carolina and Virginia generated the requirement for military hospitals.\nTuesday\, February 4th: Licensed battlefield guide and historic site manager KevinPawlak will join us to discuss a major turning point in the Civil War entitled\,“Never Such a Campaign: The Battle of Second Manassas.” In August\, 1862\, withflanking maneuvers\, surprise attacks\, and rapidly shifting battle lines\, Gen. Robert E. Lee’s emboldened Confederate army forced the Federals’ retreat towardWashington. This led to Lee’s first successful invasion of the North\, and shattered the North’s optimism of putting an early end to the war.\nTuesday\, March 4th: With over 60\,000 books written to date about the Civil War\, reasonable people may ask\, “What’s left to reveal?” Ask Judkin Browning and Timothy Silver\, two professors from Appalachian State University. Their presentation is entitled\, “Weaponizing Food: From Antietam to Vicksburg.” They recognize that the Civil War was much more than a military conflict. It was also a time when environmental issues came into play; e.g.\, like food supplies\, weather\, topography\, animals\, disease\, etc.\, all impacting the outcome of key battles from Antietam and Vicksburg.\nTuesday\, April 1st: Gen. Robert E. Lee called him “The Gallant Pelham.” Who is he? We’ll know when Sarah Bierle\, researcher\, author\, and managing editor of Emerging Civil War tells us when she presents\, “John Pelham: Trained at West Point but Aiming Artillery for the Confederacy.” As an artillery officer\, he was instrumental in creating the concept of “horse artillery.” His troops could move quickly alongside the cavalry for surprise attacks and rapid deployment of firepower\, earning him a commendation from Lee for “unflinching courage.”\nTuesday\, May 6th: “The Battle of Antietam Paintings of James Hope” will be discussed by Bradley M. Gottfried\, Ph.D.\, an educator for over four decades\, and Certified Antietam Battlefield Guide. His discussion about James Hope is fascinating. James Hope was a Civil War veteran and artist who created five large panoramic paintings of the Battle of Antietam between 1888 and 1892. These paintings are considered to be some of the most important and detailed depictions of the battle ever created.\n\nThe new season begins on Tuesday\, the day after Labor Day. Everyone is invited. Meetings are held at Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach. Registration begins at 6:15PM. Programs start at 7:00PM. Every Tuesday at 6:00 pm\, Sandbar Lectures inspire curiosity about regional history\, coastal ecosystems\, and diverse wildlife. Local subject matter experts facilitate lively and interactive presentations about a variety of fascinating topics for all visitors. \nOn August 27\, Sharks of the Carolinas and Beyond will be the focus of the lecture by Daniel C. Abel\, PhD. He will explain why “Sharks are among the most magnificent and\, unjustifiably\, most feared beasts on the planet.” \nHe’ll discuss sharks along the North Carolina coastline\, including their life history\, vital importance in ecosystems\, biomedical use\,  humans’ relationship with sharks\, threats to sharks’ survival and hope for their future. \nAbel is a professor of Marine Science at Coastal Carolina University in Conway\, SC. He earned his master’s in marine biology from the College of Charleston and his Ph.D. in marine biology from the University of California San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He was also a postdoctoral fellow in marine biomedicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. He’s authored numerous scientific papers and books\, he’s been an award-winning environmental columnist\, and he’s appeared on CNN\, CBC\, CBS\, NBC\, The Weather Channel\, and five National Geographic documentaries. \nAll one-hour Sandbar lectures are free with Museum admission. Local subject matter experts facilitate lively and interactive presentations about a variety of fascinating topics for all visitors: \nOn August 20\,Paul Hillbrand of Bald Head Island Conservancy will lead a discussion of sea turtle conservation and research on Bald Head Island. Established in 1983 in cooperation with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the National Marine Fisheries Service\, the Bald Head Island Conservancy’s (BHIC) Sea Turtle Protection Program (STPP) is nationally recognized for its long-term sea turtle monitoring program. \nDuring nightly patrols throughout nesting season\, the STPP Team’s goal is to tag and identify every individual nesting turtle that comes ashore using a standardized data collection protocol. These efforts have produced an invaluable 40+ year dataset that allows the Conservancy’s biologists and collaborators to conduct studies on the reproductive ecology\, migration\, and population trends of nesting sea turtles. \nSea Turtle Biologist and Sandbar Lecture speaker Paul Hillbrand is in his sixth season at the Bald Head Island Conservancy on Bald Head Island\, North Carolina. Hillbrand received a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Chemistry from Avila University in Kansas City and his M.S. in Marine and Environmental Science from the University of the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas. \nThroughout his career he has worked with a variety of sea turtle species including Greens\, Hawksbills\, Kemp’s Ridleys\, Loggerheads\, and Leatherbacks in labs\, rehab hospitals\, and beaches throughout Florida\, the U.S. Virgin Islands and North Carolina. \nAll one-hour Sandbar lectures are free with Museum admission. Williams shares her great-uncle’s version of events and adds one undisclosed part of the story discovered through research. \nJulie Hedgepeth Williams fell in love with history because her great-uncle survived the Titanic. He was 26 at the time\, he lived to be 91\, and she knew him well. Williams earned a master’s degree and PhD in media history from the University of Alabama\, and she is the past president of the national AmericanJournalism Historians Association. \nAll one-hour Sandbar lectures are free with Museum admission. DESCRIPTION:The Knights of Columbus at Sacred Heart Catholic Church will hold its 25th Annual Charity Golf tournament at the Carolina National Golf Course in Bolivia\, NC on Wednesday\, September 25 2024. The tournament is a flighted scramble. The cost is $125 per person\, which includes golf and cart\, light breakfast\, beverages\, cookout after golf\, and prizes for closest to the pin and flight winners.  There will also be a multiple prize money raffle\, a live auction\, and a putting contest.  In addition\, there will be a boat trip raffle for a 2hr. ride for 10 people along the Intracoastal Waterway with drinks and d’oeuvers included. The boat trip raffle tickets will cost $100 each\, but only 100 tickets will be sold. \nAll net proceeds will go to Brunswick County Charities serving needy Brunswick County residents. This program has a proven track record and has shown that people who use this program are six times more likely to be tobacco-free one year later than those who try to quit on their own. “Although I have never used tobacco myself\, I have seen first-hand that quitting tobacco is hard\, yet possible! SUMMARY:Brunswick County Veterans' Coalition Meeting
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Brunswick County Veterans Coalition was established to provide up-to-date information affecting veterans and their families.  It will hold its next meeting on July 10\, 2024\, at the Cooperative Extension Training Room\, Building N\, located in the Brunswick County Government Complex\, 25 Referendum Dr\, Bolivia at 10:00 AM.  At this meeting attendees will be briefed on what Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and what is needed to file a claim for PTSD.  Additionally\, updates on Department of Veteran Affairs medical and disability benefits will be addressed.  There are over 40 veteran organizations throughout Brunswick and New Hanover counties who send representatives to Coalition meetings to learn about veteran affairs and take this information back to their respective organizations to share with their fellow comrades.  For more information send an email to its chairman at garycrowden@aol.com.

SUMMARY:Drive-Through Food Donation Collection Event Set for July 10th    
DESCRIPTION:Dosher Memorial Hospital\, in partnership with the Brunswick Wellness Coalition (BWC)\, will host a drive through food donation event to benefit identified high need areas within Brunswick County. Donors may drive up to the hospital front entrance on Wednesday July 10th between the hours of 9:00 am and 1:00 pm to drop off healthy\, non-perishable food items to members of hospital and BWC staff\, who will coordinate distribution to local food pantries through South Brunswick PORCH and other non-profit organizations that promote access in nutritious foods. Items of particular need are: \n  \n\n1 lb. boxes of whole grain pasta\nCanned fruits no sugar/packed in water\nFruit & vegetable juices\, no added sugar\nLow sugar granola bars and fruit snacks\nLow sodium canned beans or soups\nCanned tuna and chicken packed in water/low sodium\nNatural applesauce\nOatmeal\nRice (Brown or whole grain)\nGatorade (low/no sugar)\nPudding (Sugar Free)\nBottled water\nCereals (whole grain/low sugar)\nBOOST drinks\nJelly (low/no sugar)\nNut butters/no added sugar & low salt (no glass jars\, please)\nHealthy snacks for children (low sodium chips\, veggie chips\, fruit cups)\n\nBWC Executive Director\, Dr. Leigh Lane\, said\, “There is a high need for food pantry supplies during the summer due to pantries compensating for meals children receive at school. Not only will the donation drive at Dosher fill a need in food insecure communities\, but it will also promote access to healthy foods\, including the daily recommendation of 5 servings of fruits and vegetables.” \nOver 2\,000 pounds of food were collected at last year’s event.

DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Coastal Carolina is excited to announce the opening of its NEW Climate Action Heroes exhibit! Developed by and in partnership with the National Children’s Museum and Nickelodeon Our World\, Climate Action Heroes’ mission is to empower children to affect positive change for the planet by practicing climate action superpowers in their homes\, schools\, and communities. \nThis exhibit is the latest in the Museum’s continuing efforts to provide more interactive exhibits for visitors of all ages. Upon entering the Museum’s Changing Tides Gallery\, visitors’ answers to a maze of playful questions match them with one of five hero personas with unique superpowers: \n1. Community Captains create climate-friendly actions for their home\, school\, and community. They care about where our food\, water\, energy\, clothes\, and toys come from and go after being used. Together\, lots of people are working to help communities live in harmony with the environment. They help Climate Action Heroes stay connected! \n2. Pollinator Patrollers protect and advocate for pollinators of all kinds such as bees\, butterflies\, birds and bats. Together\, lots of people work to keep the environment healthy for pollinators. They help Climate Action Heroes stay\nbuzzing! \n3. Arbor Avengers protect trees. Trees clean the air\, keep us cool\, absorb rainwater and pollution\, and provide a home for animals. Together\, lots of people are preserving existing trees and planting more. You help Climate Action Heroes stay rooted! \n4. Water Warriors protect water. They make sure people have access to water that is safe to drink. Together\, lots of people are working to keep oceans\, lakes\, and streams clean. They help Climate Action Heroes stay afloat! \n5. Mighty Meteorologists understand changing weather patterns and identify future weather events. They focus on preparing for and responding to severe weather. Together\, lots of people are promoting climate resilience to keep people safe as weather changes happen more often.
